Why do I get damp in my wardrobe?

Damp can get into your wardrobe in a few different ways. Maybe your wardrobe is in a room that is too humid? Many British households experience this in the winter time. If your wardrobe is in a room that is too humid, then naturally this humidity will also affect your wardrobe and make your clothes damp.

The second way is putting away clothes that are still wet or damp. The excess moisture on these garments evaporates inside your wardrobe and increases the humidity level of the wardrobe. This causes the whole wardrobe to become damp and affects all of your clothes.

The third way is that you potentially have a damp wall issue behind the wardrobe. Please check behind your wardrobe before buying a wardrobe dehumidifier as you may have a bigger issue. If you discover widespread damp you need to assess whether it has come from the wall or not. A wardrobe dehumidifier will not help with this issue as it is a structural problem.

How do I stop damp in my wardrobe?

Always make sure any clothes you put away are dry. Putting damp clothes in the wardrobe is one of the most surefire ways to guarantee your clothes will stink of mildew. If you make sure your clothes are fully dry then you are less likely to have damp issues.

Ensure that your wardrobe isn’t pushed up against a damp wall. If your wardrobe is up against a damp wall, this can cause you serious problems. Before you have had a chance to notice, your clothes could become damaged by mould and damp. The moisture will pass from the wall, through the back of the wardrobe and into the contents.

If you have done these two things and still have issues, consider a wardrobe dehumidifier. You may not want to wait until you have issues to get one though. If you have expensive clothes collection then it is best to have one anyway as a safety precaution. If you have expensive dresses/suits/shoes etc in a wardrobe then in our opinion you should always have a dehumidifier in with them. This protects your investment and reduces the chance you will ever have damp issues.

Can you put a dehumidifier in a wardrobe?

Yes, you can, they usually come in the form of moisture absorbers that you can hang up inside the wardrobe. For most wardrobes, we recommend the Nyxi hanging wardrobe dehumidifier. These are perfect for most wardrobes. If you have a larger than average wardrobe, you can always hang up more than 1 moisture absorber to ensure your bases are covered.

If you have a very large wardrobe such as a fitted wardrobe or walk-in wardrobe then we recommend a mini dehumidifier or a larger moisture absorber such as the Unibond Aero 360. For 90% of people, however, the Nyxi hanging wardrobe dehumidifier will be more than enough protection.

It is important you keep your clothes nice and dry because everyone knows that disgusting damp smell that can occur after a few days! It has happened to us all and a wardrobe dehumidifier is a good way of reducing the chance of this happening.

How do wardrobe dehumidifiers work?

Most of the time they use highly absorbent chemicals or crystals to suck moisture out of the air around them. This moisture then drips into a water storage pouch or container. After a period of time, they dry out the air in your wardrobe. This results in drier, fresher smelling clothes and a reduced chance of damp and mould occurring. As well as protecting your clothes, they also protect the wardrobe itself. This is more of a concern with wooden wardrobes as wood can be damaged quickly by damp and mould.

I have a question about these – what do you do with them when the water pouch is full? Throw the whole thing out? Thank you.

How often should you check and change them if you’re storing things in a loft.
